Abstract

This article presents the results of the research executed with teachers from federal educational institution, working in the First Segment of elementary school. The overall goal was to know what they think and know about the 10.639/03 Law and fundamental concepts of debates concerning ethnic-race relations; for the purpose of subsidizing the establishment of the Center of Afro-Brazilian Studies, to point actions necessary to its acting. The research focussed on a questionnaire, voluntary and anonymous. The date analysis, in the way it was thought by authors such as Munanga (2005), Fernandes (2009), Gomes (2005, 2011), Lopes (2005) e Trindade (2008), revealed that some teachers: demonstrate a superficial understanding of the ethnic-race relations theme; perform on their own initiative, specific activities in classrooms; and highlight the need for training and the development of knowledge and activities that help to effect this subject in the school routine.
