ETHNOMATEMICAL KNOWLEDGE PRODUCED BY BLACK WOMEN THAT DOES BRAIDS
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this article, we discuss the ethnomathematical knowledge used in the preparation of "afros" hairstyles. We argue that the daily routine of black women that does braids is impregnated with mathematical knowledge and actions and that these forms of knowledge are invisible in Brazilian society. We are concerned with demonstrating afro-diasporic cultural practices, the Afro hairstyles, as potent pedagogical tools for elementary school mathematics, especially school geometry. We reflect on the possible strategies of teaching school mathematics, based on the knowledge and practices of the black female universe, as well as creating methodological supports for the implementation of the law 10.639/2003 of African and Afro-Brazilian History and Culture and we seek to re-signify the place of production of African knowledge in the fields of technology and mathematics.
