Abstract

This article presents the result of a Scientific Initiation research carried out in the year 2020, whose main objective was to investigate how blacks are represented in history textbooks in the light of Law 10.639 / 2003, which included the obligation to teach history and Afro-Brazilian culture in all official curricula of Brazilian schools. In order to achieve the proposed objective, comparative analyzes were carried out on 44 history textbooks adopted in public schools between 1910 and 2018, in order to ascertain and point out the adjustments and permanence in relation to the representation, culture and history of Afro-descendants in these books. The results of the analyzes pointed to the fact that after the implementation of Law 10.639 / 2003, there were gradual positive changes in relation to the insertion of African history and culture contents in textbooks. However, it is clear that there is still a long way to go in education in order to deconstruct prejudices against blacks in Brazilian society.
