BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND SECRET: AN INSIDER NARRATIVES ABOUT BEING THE SAINT AND RESEARCHING CANDOMBLÉS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present study sought to reflect on the relationship between candomblé researchers and scientific studies about Afro-Brazilian religions/ancestralities specifically in the context of candomblés. This is a complex reflection that discusses the fine line between being a saint and researching the terreiro and its dimensions. As methodology, we conducted a critical review of the literature, specifically of the analyses and studies conducted by insider researchers, that is, “from within” the terreiros, and empirical observations from the experiences of the first and third authors who assume in the present study the condition of candomblé insider researchers. In light of the above, this becomes singular with regard to the oath of secrecy about sacred knowledge, the so-called awo òrìṣà. In this sense, considering the assumed objectives, the present study attempted to provoke the connection of issues such as candomblé, ritual secrecy and institutional racism, starting from a brief historical rescue of research on the people of the saint in Brazil.
