Abstract

This article aims to discuss the constitution of the ethnic-racial identity of children, in an institution of Early Childhood Education, located in the city of São Paulo. At the same time, it aims to explain how the body functions as the main means of communicating, in the process of identity construction, specially for black children. Among the objectives of the research, we sought to understand whether, and how the children of preschool age understood ethnic-racial identification. The theoretical framework was formed specially for those who consider race as a social construction. In methodological terms, we opted for ethnographic approach. The results showed that young children knew and they used the ethnic-racial categories, and they expressed the desire to have characteristics associated with the group of white people, because the hair and the skin tone were the most mentioned. All of this pointed to the fact that the senses and meanings given to whites and blacks were already appropriated by children.
