Abstract

This text intends to discuss some situations in progress in Maranhão that show conflicts between groups formed by representatives of traditional communities based on narratives about people from “terreiro” and quilombolas. Through empirical research procedures that involved the participation of social agents and focused thematic and issues related to the dimensions of territory, religion and identity construction. Those narratives circumscribe problems experienced in the region called Baixada Maranhense and also in the metropolitan region of São Luís. A critique of the instrumentalist perspective of the use of natural resources is identified with an emphasis on ecological imbalances and damage from real governmental projects, agribusiness, construction of ports and oil refineries etc.
