Abstract

This text discusses the race and ethnic relationships the teaching of History, aiming at some elements related to equality and inequality, especially, inherent in the living conditions of the black population, portrayed in the teaching of history. The present paper aims at contributing to minimize the risk of reinforcing discriminatory and excluding processes, which are frequently reinforced by teachers and educators' unpreparedness for the dissemination and transmission of contents, conveyed by the didactic material, both inside and out of the school space. We considered that teaching History implies the reconstruction of the black people’s identity in Brazil, the construction of an approach by a race and ethnic group or starting from the relationship with the ‘other’. Such construction implies a subjective, a symbolic and a political dimension, which involves the understanding that the teaching of History and of cultural diversity includes the feeling of equality. This way, the subjects understand themselves and respect the differences, contributing to the understanding that the history of the black population is also the Brazilian history.
