JOÃO ALBASINI AND HIS SPEECH ABOUT THE “CIVILIZATION” WILD IN COLONIAL MOZAMBIQUE
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to unravel the arguments of João Albasini dos Santos, an African-Portuguese journalist, born in Lourenço Marques, former capital of Mozambique. It is important in this reflection to analyze the argumentative strategies used by this writer in his newspaper articles published at the beginning of the twentieth century. This approach will focus on the metaphoric dimension of the dichotomy “civilization” versus “wild”, present in Albasini’s arguments. It is worth mentioning that this dichotomy was used in an inverted position by the character in question to debunk the fallacy that Portuguese colonialism brought progress for the people living in this region.
