Abstract

By establishing a dialogue between Grada Kilomba and Laura Perls, this theoretical essay seeks to point out possible ways of understanding the experiences of black people in Brazil, through a Gestalt perspective. Considering the inside-outside dimensions of the psychotherapeutic space and assuming racism as a given reality, we approach the psychological clinic as a political space, heir to a colonial and slave-owning past. We expose the negotiation of racism by relating it to the regurgitation of false dreams of an internalized whiteness. To this end, we resort to the Gestalt epistemology of amplification and strengthening of the functions of contact and support, proposing psychotherapeutic resources as support for negotiating everyday racism. Finally, we emphasize the need for an epistemological space rooted in the Brazilian territory and consider possible strategies and escape routes that can be followed within the gaps existing in the racist system.
