Abstract

This work analyzes the limits and potentialities of the Rio de Janeiro Poetry Slam scene as safe spaces to produce health for black women. The research followed three slams, during the years 2019 and 2020, through participant research. In addition, we interviewed five poets, all black women, addressing their participation in the slams. The interviews were transcribed and categorized and here we specifically present the results that address mental health. The slam is presented as a safe space with limitations. Despite the possibility of self-expression, the most popular themes still end up reinforcing the images of control that imprison the black population, focused on the pain and martyrdom of black people. However, organizing slams by and for black people, such as Slam negritude, stands as a locus of enunciation in which black people can produce mental health free from the shackles of whiteness.
