Is God white? A study on the racialization of representations of God in Pentecostalism
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the article, I summarized part of the results of a research on racism in Pentecostalism, conducted in a congregation of the Assembly of God in Castanhal, Pará. My goal is to clarify the racialization of representations of God among Pentecostals. For this, the methodology used was participant observation and interviews. I analyzed the material gathered in the light of an anti-colonial perspective, based on black, post-colonial and decolonial authors. The results show that the racialization of representations of God among Pentecostals results directly from the racialization of divine representations in Christianity. Because to the impacts of exogenous transformations on religion, however, there is an incipient transformation underway in the Pentecostal segment that increasingly assumes, in a conscious way, blackness as a constituent element of its religious representations.
