Abstract

This article aims to point out life experiences related to the daily life of African origin populations that lived on the Santa Catarina Island, with their family relationships and their solidarity bonds, in the context of the early nineteenth century. From various sources, we will have

as guide of these experiences the trajectories of Ritta Pires and Joaquim Venâncio, both African of nation and with a condition of freedman and freedwoman, which lived in Desterro (now Florianópolis) until the mid-nineteenth century. To reconstruct fragments of their trajectories were used several documents such as baptismal records of the Main Church of Desterro Parish, Meeting Minutes of the Brotherhood Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Benedict of the Black Man, inventories, wills and correspondences of Province's Police Chief. We assume that the experiences of these Africans enable us to understand the struggles of people of African descent in search of freedom and emancipation.
