"THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH": THE DYNAMICS OF NEGOTIATION AND CONFLICT BETWEEN TERREIROS AND "EVANGELICAL" TRAFFICKERS IN TWO FAVELAS IN RIO
Main Article Content
Abstract
The following article presents data and reflections on the violence against Afro-Brazilian religions in some Rio de Janeiro favelas after the vertiginous growth of denominated (neo) Pentecostal churches. There are records of terreiros suffering attacks and sanctions from drug traffickers, pastors and residents "in the name of Jesus" since the late 1980s. In 2006, the drug trafficking leader in most of the Governor Island favelas, in the northern area of Rio de Janeiro, ordered the closure of all the terreiros in the areas where it operated. In contrast, the terreiros remain in some areas. In the Serrinha favela, located in the Madureira neighborhood, the situation is also multifaceted. It seeks to understand the multiple forms of approach, conflict and negotiation between the different actors who share the daily life of these places.
