Abstract

The article investigates the persecutions to the afro-indigenous-Brazilian cult
generically denominated of catimbó, in the first decades of century XX. Through the periodicals
it is possible to understand the main victims: the African, Afro-Brazilian and indigenous
populations. The discourse of sanitation and 'order and progress' were the main arguments used
by the holders of power, despite the presence of authorities enjoying such practices, when the
resources of science did not become satisfactory.
