ARTE AFRO-BRASILEIRA: CONTRAPONTO DA PRODUÇÃO VISUAL NO BRASIL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Afro-Brazilian art emerged in defiance of official art, which was Eurocentric and
white in profile. Its authors were kept outside the official circuit of the national fine arts, such as
the academy and galleries. Fruit of crisscrossing, Afro-Brazilian art did not constitute a stylistic
school. It comes from conflicts and negotiations between indigenous, European and African
experiences. Local identities require more and more space in the contemporary art system. . To
understand oneself as an artist and black implies in assembling the identity, perceiving it as an
essential political instrument for survival in the professional circuit of the visual arts today. In
the terreiro de candomblé or in the gallery, Afro-Brazilian art continues being a counterpoint to
the euroreferenced visual discourse, one black cultural resistent act.
