Abstract

The decision to do a master's degree in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was born from a vacation I took to the city in early 2012. On this trip I was struck by the clear absence of phenotypically black people in the streets. Where are the Afro-Argentines? What is the history of that population in Buenos Aires? These questions haunted me the entire trip. Due to this persistent curiosity, the following year I enrolled in a masters program at the University of Buenos Aires- UBA to begin to investigate this question. It was not easy to develop a thesis on the subject of "Afrodescendants" in Argentina. The amount of academic work is still scarce, and most of it has been done by white researchers. For this reason, I decided to investigate black history from the stories and perspectives of the black people themselves, while also considering my own experience in a double role of researcher and activist.
