Abstract

: With no pretension to present the whole history of the Brazilian black social movement, in this article we dare to recover historical notes that help to understand why education has become a demand of the black population. The long history of struggle for the right to school and education has always been feature of the black social movement, with systematic records since the days of the Frente Negra Brasileira. As a legal achievement, Law 10.639 of 2003, which modified the Law on the Guidelines and Bases of National Education 9394/96, represents an important achievement, but challenges and misunderstandings on the part of managers and leaders at the municipal, state and federal level are still challenges, its full implementation.
