Abstract

This article discusses the Traditional Communities social participation in the scope of the elaboration and implementation process of public policies related to water management. In order to do so, the Saint Francis river basin was analyzed, with a cut to the section referring to the state of Bahia, highlighting that since the first formation of the Saint Francis River Basin Committee, there was participation of representatives of traditional peoples and communities among its members. The text is organized in topics that address aspects of the federal and state water management scales, the participation of traditional communities in basin committees, socio-environmental conflicts and the articulating power of social movements in the visibility of Traditional Communities. The data contained in the text are the result of analyzes of secondary data of several important sources of research and, finally, the final considerations reaffirm the importance of the Traditional Communities in the defense of waters, territories and other peoples.
