LIFE AND LABOR OF HUMAN BEING UNDER SLAVERY SYSTEM: JOSÉ DE ALENCAR'S PLAYS, MÃE AND O DEMÔNIO FAMILIAR
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study analyzes how are represented the slave characters in the drama Mãe (1860)
and in the comedy O Demônio Familiar (1857) by José de Alencar, focusing mainly in how they
live and work. The analysis is based on a sociological perspective and on a Dialogical Discourse
Analysis, following Bakhtin and the Circle, seeking to understand the interactions between social
context and the construction of protagonists. As a result, it is observed that the characters,
although living under slavery, can plan, negotiate and choose their own fate. Reading those
nineteenth plays is still relevant because the economic slavery system is illegal nowadays but the
slavery culture still prevails. Thus, reading them can provide an extended view through the
Brazilian History that must be altered.
