Abstract

This article discusses the importance attributed by the residents of Caiana dos Crioulos (Alagoa Grande-PB) to some traditional cultural practices of this community, as the ciranda, coco de roda and pife. Initially, the uses of some categories such as 'rescue' and 'culture' by the residents themselves, especially those linked to cultural groups, as one of the groups of ciranda dancers are problematized. Then, it is presented the modification of some of these practices throughout the history of Caiana dos Crioulos, allowing the understanding of the current configuration of the ciranda, coco de roda and pife. Finally, it is analyzed how the local leaders are linked to a tradition that relates the prominent role in the community to the action ahead of cultural groups and how this has been re-signified in a context of affirming a quilombola identity. To do so, we sought an approximation between History and Anthropology, where we found an oral methodology with the ethnographies produced in field research on the community, analyzing the boundaries with other sources, such as: magazines; bibliographic productions; audio musical records; audiovisual records.
