Abstract

This work intends to discuss the textual production which Afro-descendent writers in the 19th century produced about themselves and their hopes, as a way of being active in Brazilian cultural and political life. It shows some strategies created to interrogate the structures of thought, taste and values instituted by the symbolic system, as well as to insert  their intellectual  and symbolic capital into the field of national intellectual production.
