Abstract
This article seeks to discuss the social representations of former slaves and their descendants in Bahia´s hinterlands in the post-abolition period, more specifically the region of Vitória da Conquista, southeast of that state. The study is grounded on the perspectives afforded by Cultural Studies, utilizing the history of slavery and abolition in the region as a point of departure. The investigation provides an analysis of representations of former slaves and their descendants, based mainly on newspapers and criminal law-suits.
