Abstract

The Brazilian Institute of African Studies (IBEA) was created in 1975 with the aim of researching and discussing the problems of blacks in Brazil. The article analyzes its foundation with emphasis on the role played by the writer Clóvis Moura, as well as highlights the decisive contribution of intellectuals and activists from different instances, notably the black movement, Brazilian Union of Writers (UBE) and leftist political organizations, mainly the communist parties.
