Abstract

This article aims to present places and spaces of the African descendant people in the São Paulo city in the early twentieth century, a moment where the modernization of the social relations was related with the attempts to erase the traces of slave society of former times, including the presence of descendants of enslaved populations. Since the end of century XIX, newspapers and charitable societies sought to create a network of solidarity between former slaves and descendants, and thereby, ensure social ascension, visibility and respectability. The Palmares Civic Center was one of the greatest exponents of the period, fruit of the accumulated experience of the associationism of the African descendants.
