EMBARRASSMENT IN THE LAND OF FREEDOM: PEASANTRY AND PATRIMONIALIZATION IN THE SERRA DA BARRIGA
Main Article Content
Abstract
Since the tipping of the Serra da Barriga, in 1985, the residents resist to the pressures and interference from the government. They threaten their freedom and life story in the territory. The fact that the people are all rural workers and farmers with very low economic condition, and they aren’t descendants of the old “Quilombo dos Palmares” (historical fact that are the reason of the tipping) makes the population even more invisible and vulnerable. Thus, the Serra presents itself involved in a conflict of interests established between the local community, the Black Movement and the Union, located in a rural area of great financial speculation - the sugarcane region. In this perspective, the work was based on a quantitative and qualitative research that allowed the construction of a socio-economic profile of the community, detecting their perceptions about where they live.
