BRANQUITUDE IS BRANQUIDADE? A THEORETICAL REVIEW OF THE APPLICATION OF TERMS IN BRAZILIAN SCENERY

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to presente a brief theoretical review of the use of the concepts of “branquitude” in opposition to “branquidade”, mainly in Brazil, showing how their meanings were used to reach the different definitions developed by theoretical Edith Piza. According to the author's perspective, the application of the terms “branquidade” and “branquitude” differs from the conceptual point of view at take the terms “negritude” and “negridade” as preconditions for its implementation. While “branquidade” is associated with “negridade”, term used in the decades of 20 and 30 by the Frente Negra Brasileira with the aim, in general, to approach blacks from white referential, thus favoring social acceptance. The term branquitude refers to the point of overcoming the white ideal by accepting the existence of the privilege for the whites and their consequent attempt to combat racism.
