SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS OF WHITENESS IN SALVADOR: A PSYCHOSOCIAL EXPLORATION STUDY OF THE RACIALIZATION OF WITH PEOPLE

Abstract

 The Brazilian multiracial context provides differentiated dynamics of subjective experience for blacks and whites. It is reiterated that factors of racial inequalities, such as prejudice, racial discrimination are unique problems of blacks. Study the role of the white in race relations is important because the building of itself and of the other is inseparable. Brazilian Psychology has scarce production of the race issue, revealing that it escapes the gaze and professional care. Through the testimonies of eight graduate students, both genders, self-identified white color, from the Psychology College and Social Sciences College of the UFBA; using techniques of discourse analysis, questions arose about how it is constitute the social representations of whites over themselves, meanings associated with whiteness, and descriptions and analyzes were made about the content. The representations were marked for the representation that to be white is to be "normal"; no implication and minimization of problematic racial and non-recognition of privilege arising from racial inequalities.
