Abstract

The purpose of the following article is to introduce some aspects on the history of André Rebouças, black abolitionist engineer who was born a free man in Bahia. Although being one of the most celebrated characters in our history, some of his steps are still very little known and quite obscure and lacking in-depth research. Despite substantial reputation as an abolitionist, advocate for freedom and agrarian reform, Rebouças has often been regarded as a House Negro due to his support for the monarchy, which was totally in contradiction with his convictions regarding the existing means of production, being one of the loudest voices against the slave-based upper classes. Here, we seek to share Rebouças little known side and the impact that interracial relation patterns have had in his life.
