Abstract

This paper explores several discursive-identity aspects relating to Maria Clara in Pedaços da fome (1963), by Carolina Maria de Jesus. It is a work in Critical Discourse Analysis, from an intersectional perspective that considers nuances of class, gender and race. The discussions undertaken point out revealing contrasts between the rural/wealth and urban/poverty contexts in which asymmetrical relations are interwoven. Beyond a necropolitics/human geography of indigence, the novel constitutes misery and hunger as elements that reveal inequalities in marriage and in the exercise of parenting. Motherhood, in its turn, is discursivized not only as a torment but also as a source of renewal and an affective dimension.
