Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to identify racial inequalities in epidemiological data on hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 in the first year of the pandemic in Brazil. For this, were surveyed the COVID-19 Epidemiological Bulletins bublicized by the Ministry of Health. The time frame used was from April 2020 to April 2021. We analyzed the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 broken down by race/color in order to compare the percentages between white and black individuals. In the first year of the pandemic, of the 1,006,471 hospitalizations, whites were 413,821 (41%) and blacks were 375,880 (37%). Of the 329,150 deaths, 134,961 (41%) were black people and 132,956 (40%) were white people. On average, 20% of hospitalizations and deaths had race/color ignored or misinformed. In this sense, we did not identify marked racial inequality in the MS data, what differs from the literature and other databases.
