Abstract

This paper seeks to show the origins of the specialized medical field such as obstetrics and gynecology, inside the Santa Casa de Misericordia Hospital in Vitoria da Conquista and aims to contribute to describe the emergence of this specializations between 1930 and 1950. In the city, childbirth or so-called "ladies’ diseases" were customarily treated by midwives and popular drugs in the restricted space of home. Doctor’s advertisements in newspapers revealed that the specialty title was rarely mentioned, the term "ladies’ diseases" being used until 1950, when it began to be replaced by the concepts of obstetrics and gynecology. We conclude that Santa Casa was a place for medical training in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology in the city, although many doctors have sought other ways, such as private clinics and home care. Obstetrics was one of the first areas to have an exclusive and reserved space within the hospital, and the maternity was inaugurated in 1952.
