Abstract

From listening to Xenia França's first solo album (Xenia, 2017), we reflect on the African black legacy from the perspective of the popular song. We propose “lines of approximation” of Xenia's song narratives as “black escrevivências” (EVARISTO, 2020) demarcating the album as a “safe space” of black female protagonism as an exercise of self-reflection and self-affirmation (LORDE, 2020; COLLINS, 2019). The artistic life experience in sustaining her own voice results in a metalanguage of Xenia's professional and personal trajectory, composing images and discourses full of aphrodiasporic interfaces with anti-racist political insertion. The article retroacts and feeds once again the listeners of the disc, allowing articulations between different artistic languages (popular song and Brazilian literature) from the perspective of black intellectuals who conduct the African legacy in dialogue with the contemporary social sciences.
