ONLY BECAUSE I AM WHITE: REPRESENTATIONAL DISPUTES OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE COUPLE CASE AT THE WORLD CUP 2014

Abstract
This paper analyzes the competition for representational control of Brazil through media discourse in the episode "couple of the World Cup", as it became known the case of alleged replacement of the pair of black artists Camila Pitanga and Lázaro Ramos by white artists Fernanda Lima and Rodrigo Hilbert at the position of ceremony masters in the Keys Draw's event of the 2014 World Cup. The background of the episode, experts and journalists texts and statements of the artists involved are analyzed in the light of cultural studies. In fictions arising in the public debate, whiteness and miscegenation emerge as notions agencies in conflicts for representational control of the country and the building of their social identity.
