THE INFLUENCE OF THE OTHER IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LOOK: CURLY HAIR, CHILDHOOD, GENDER AND RACE
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss, through the film Pelo Malo (2014), experiences involving the black body while highlighting curly hair, which is the central theme of the story. It is the willingness of a child to straighten his hair and, from then on, become “beautiful” for a school photo and achieve to be famous. This hair treatment raises a series of dilemmas that lead to the questioning of beauty patterns identified early in a child's life and the argument about gender and race imposed by society and reproduced by the family in the child's socialization.
