Abstract

With the purpose of emphasizing the importance of illustration in children's literature, this article aims to analyze the representativeness of black characters, especially children, in works illustrated by Josias Marinho. He is an artist politically committed to the appreciation of Afro-Brazilian and African culture. Through the analysis of the illustration itself and its relationship with the verbal text, the methodological procedures for the analysis of the investigated works were constituted. In them, the children were portrayed in scenes of affection, receiving family support and care, practicing acts of resistance, as well as getting to know themselves better. Such results point to an advance, as they overcome stereotypes produced throughout the history of Brazilian children's literature.
