Main Article Content
Abstract
The paper reports on the epidemiology of sickle cell disease (SCD) in the State of Pará (Amazon), analyzed in its bio-social aspect. Pará is the third largest state with self-declared black and mixed race population in Brazil (76.5%) and for being the SCD prevalent in this group of people, it is considerate as a public health issue in the bio-anthropology bias, under review literature and semi-structured interviews with individuals with SCD at the hematology center of Belém City. About 1% of the Pará’s population has SCD, with a prevalence of 37% among their families. In general, low-income people, with difficulties in access to healthcare, suffer ethnic stigma and make use of products of traditional medicine (folk medicine) as a complementary treatment. Understanding the SCD in Pará indicates the need for more effective public policies in order to contribute for the improvement of quality of life of this population’s segment
