Abstract

This article aims to analyze, through the examination of the daily life of the urban space in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the presence of craftsmen who worked in the construction, production and repair of the most diverse essential items to society at that time. Based on the characterization, and the discussion of aspects of the daily life of carpenters, joiners, stoneworkers, blacksmiths, locksmiths, among others, we will seek to bring to the center of the discussion aspects related to access to literacy, instruction, acquisition of a monetary culture, diseases and ills, of those who built the cities and the wealth of 19th century society.
